Visit Johannesburg the City of Gold, also known as Jozi, Joburg or Egoli.

Johannesburg is the heart beat of South Africa, a truly African cosmopolitan city with its contrasts. Johannesburg offers you diversity of culture; adventure, history, shopping, business, leisure, and a whole lot more.

On this Johannesburg sightseeing tour we visit the Carlton Centre. Africa’s tallest building 50 stories or 222m. From the top you have a spectacular panoramic view of Johannesburg landscape.

Johannesburg is the youngest major city in the world. It was found on 4th October 1886. The city’s altitude is 2000m above sea level.

Johannesburg is the largest urban forest in the world. There are more than 6 million trees across the city. Johannesburg boasts 17 nature reserves and 12 rivers.
After an orientation of what is where, our Johannesburg sightseeing tour moves on to Constitutional Hill.

Constitutional Hill

The fort was used as a prison until 1986 and was the only prison in the world to have accommodated 3 Nobel peace price winners (Ghandi, Luthuli and Mandela).

The fort, which was the former men's "native prison" complex, is now converted into an interactive museum.  The notorious section 4 & 5 were the cells where many of the anti-apartheid activists were detained. Such as Chief Albert Luthuli, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi and others.

It is now open to the public and has been declared a national Monument, today known as Constitutional Hill. Guided tours are conducted, which cover the prison museum, the Old fort, Number four and the new Constitutional Court. The New Constitutional Court is also part of the complex and visitors can attend hearings and view an impressive art collection.

(Here we have the possibility of a snack break, before the Johannesburg sightseeing tour heads on to Museum Africa.)

Museum Africa:

Museum Africa is housed in what used to be the fruit and vegetable market of Johannesburg. It was constructed in 1913. In the early 1990’s it was adapted to house Museum Africa. The museum opened its doors in 1994.

It carries a variety of exhibitions. The principal permanent exhibition is the Johannesburg Transformations, plotting the political, economic and social effect of the discovery of gold, on the history and people of Johannesburg.

The museum tells the story of life in Southern Africa, from the Stone Age to the nuclear age and beyond. It gives you an insight into the impression of the Anglo Boer War. It also displays South African Rock Art, geological specimens and the photography Museum. Another interesting highlight is the audio/visual display of the Nelson Mandela trail “Tried for Treason”.

Gramadoelas

To end our Johannesburg sightseeing tour we move over to the Gramadoelas, an exotic African Restaurant. The ambience can be described as authentic, culture, classic and elegant.

It’s an African dinner buffet never to be forgotten.
