A visit to the newly opened Origins Centre is an absolute must for every tourist visiting South Africa. Not only does the Origins Centre have an outstanding, and fascinating, collection of rock paintings, engravings and artefacts, but more importantly, the history of South Africa is told here, through the art of the San people.
If we want to understand the culture, the spiritual beliefs, and the very essence of the Zulu and Xhosa people as they are today, and even the reasons for the development of Soweto and other townships - we need to take a step back a few hundred years, and follow the path that the rock art stories can tell us ...
The Origins Centre moto: We are who we are, because of who we were!
We now proceed to Johannesburg's largest flea market, at the Bruma Lake. The Market has more than 620 stalls, a multitude of exciting curio, from African textile to furniture. This is the right place to get that special something, or simply just browse and get the feel of trade in Johannesburg. If you want to bargin this is your chance. The complex has a variety of restaurants and shopping venues.
We end this day with an interactive cultural experience, at the Lesedi Cultural Village. It lies north of Johannesburg, less than an hours drive.
The Lesedi village is set amongst the pristine bushveld and the rocky hills of the Magaliesberg Mountains. The Lesedi village a unique cultural experience of the colourful traditional homestead of the Basotho, Ndebele, Pedi, Xhosa and Zulu people. You can even stay overnight in comfortable guests huts.
You will be invited to the Ndebele village where an additional welcome by all the people of Lesedi, takes place. The cultural program begins with a multi-visual presentation on the history and origins of today’s rainbow nation. This is followed by a guided tour of the four ethnic homesteads Zulu, Basotho, Xhosa and Pedi.
As the sun sets over the African bush, guests are escorted to the Boma for traditional singing and dancing (a very participative affair!!) depicting stories that date back to the days of their ancestors. The guests are then treated to a Pan African Buffet in the Nyama Choma Restaurant.
After dinner Guests are invited to gather round the fire outside the bar for a cultural surprise. This entertainment starts off with some "Mamba Juice", a unique Lesedi potion accompanied by Storytelling, Participative Singing and Dancing or simply an opportunity to gather more information regarding the myths and traditions of the people of South Africa. This wonderful night at the Lesedi village you will never forget.
